“Giving birth
Is little more than a set of muscular contractions granting passage of a child.
Then the mother is born.”  ~Erma Bombeck

Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, has been used in China for centuries for the enhancement of fertility, treatment throughout pregnancy, and assistance in childbirth and the postpartum.  This long tradition of women’s medicine provides a system that is safe, gentle and effective in  correcting barriers to fertility.

An important first step in evaluating the menstrual cycle is the basal body temperature chart, or BBT.  By reviewing a woman’s BBT chart and menstrual cycle, critical information is obtained which aids in understanding the condition of the woman’s energy patterns, stress levels, core temperature features, health and condition of the Blood, and many other clues to assist in outlining a plan of care.  A useful, user-friendly version of the BBT can be found at www.fertilityfriend.com.

Many women seek TCM as an alternative to Western fertility treatment protocols.   Acupuncture has also been shown to be a  beneficial adjunct for those who are going through fertility treatments at reproductive medicine centers.  Several scientific studies have been published showing a significant increase in the success rate when IVF is combined with acupuncture.  In the studies, IVF cycles without the use of acupuncture yielded a 26% pregnancy rate.  The pregnancy rate for IVF cycles done in conjunction with acupuncture were increased to 42%.

The primary benefits, to both “natural” cycles and assisted procedures, come from improved uterine blood flow, increased numbers of healthy eggs, improved sperm parameters and a sense of relaxation during a process that can be very stressful for many couples.
